Benefits of Using Raised Beds in Edible Landscaping
According to Rosalind Creasy, edible landscaping is referred to as the practical integration of food plants within an ornamental or decorative setting. The same design principles of the usual landscaping approach are observed but the difference is we make use of edible plants.
Here’s something you might not have considered: raised beds will provide a better planting system as opposed to planting directly into the ground.
1. A much improved soil
You can choose the soil that is more suitable for your plants, although it should not be compacted or compressed compared to the surrounding area.
A raised soil will warm faster than ground soil; raised beds also have better drainage systems that allow plants to grow quicker and healthier.
2. Organised planting system
You can achieve a better organised planting system using raised beds - divide them into 4 or 6 sections (depending on the size of your raised bed) and simply label what kind of edible plant should be planted in each section.
3. Better weed/pest control
Make the most out of your raised beds! By adding wire or hardware cloth, you can keep the pests away.
When it comes to weed control, you can also use a weed barrier or a soil that is free of weed seeds.
4. Adaptability
For those who have mobility challenges, raised beds are highly adaptable - you can apply them in a location that enjoys easy access; concrete or paving slabs. Just make sure you take the proper precautions to ensure effective drainage.
Raised beds can also be elevated! All you will need is some extra timber for the table legs.
